The now-dominant assumptions about human origins are in need of (and about to have) a drastic revision. In theory, scientists proclaim themselves ready to follow the facts wherever they might lead. But in practice, the social mechanisms of the scientific community, the institutional imperative, set limits beyond which its members in good standing may cross only at their "peril." When eminent authorities announce their rejection of certain categories of evidence, others hesitate to mention similar evidence out of fear of ridicule. Thus, "anomalous" evidence gradually slides from dispute into complete oblivion. Modern students of paleoanthropology are not in possession of the complete range of scientific evidence concerning human origins and antiquity. Rather most people, including professional scientists, are exposed to only a carefully edited selection of evidence supporting the currently accepted theory that protohuman hominids in the Late Pleistocene evolved from apelike predecessors in Africa during the Late Pliocene and Early Pleistocene, and that modern human subsequently evolved from the protohuman hominids in the Late Pleistocene in Africa or elsewhere. The current theory of an African evolution is incomplete at best. Tool making hominids indistinguishable from Homo sapiens were present in habitable areas all over the planet far back into the Tertiary epoch. This does not, however, rule out the simultaneous presence of more apelike hominids, some of whom may have manufactured some of the most primitive stone implements. Paleoanthropology students are generally not at all acquainted with many nineteenth-century discoveries demonstrating the presence of humans of the modern type in Tertiary times. There exists strong prejudice against anomalous evidence that is "old." But some "old" accepted evidence is honored. For example, Java man, highlighted in all modern textbooks was a nineteenth-century discovery. But the less familiar nineteenth-century evidence that goes against the theories presented in modern textbooks is tainted with suspicion, more so if one has never even heard of it before. Little more than a century ago, science began to entertain notions of life arising from inert chemicals. Through the microscopes of that time the cell appeared to be no more than a single bag of chemicals. It therefore seemed reasonable to scientists such as Darwin to imagine that elementary living forms may have arisen from the random combination of organic chemicals in a primordial "soup." But as man probed into the mysteries of the living cell that idea that life came from chemicals began to appear less reasonable. Yet most scientists today cling to the dogma of chemical evolution.

As time went on, microscopic exploration gradually revealed increasingly complex phenomena within the tiny cell, such as the precise regulation of cellular metabolism by the nucleic acids (DNA and RNA), which involves the sophisticated interaction of thousands of kinds of elaborately structured protein molecules. It was no longer quite so easy to imagine how all this could have occurred by random combination of chemicals.

Describing the remarkably intricate biochemistry of the cell, James D. Watson, co-discoverer of the DNA structure, wrote in his book Molecular Biology of the Gene , "We must immediately admit that the structure of the cell will never be understood in the same way as that of water or glucose molecules. Not only will the exact structure of most macromolecules within the cell remain unsolved, but their relative locations within cells can only be vaguely known. It is thus not surprising that many chemists, after brief periods of enthusiasm for studying 'life,' silently return to the world of pure chemistry."

Yet despite ever-increasing awareness of the structural and behavioral complexity of even the simplest living systems, many scientists continue to theorize that life has emerged from a primordial chemical soup without the direction of any higher organizing principles. They imagine that in the course of random chemical bonding, simple molecules combined into complex organic compounds, which eventually integrated themselves into self-reproducing organisms. This scenario is being presented as the undisputed truth about the origin of life in every science classroom around the world - in grade schools, high schools and colleges and universities. Radio and television, and the popular science publications reinforce the message.

To some, talk about topics such as whether or not life emerged from matter may appear far removed from day to day affairs, and thus irrelevant to their own lives. Whether the discussions involve highly reasonable ideas based on solid evidence or vague, unsubstantiated hypotheses rooted in flimsy data and nurtured by scientific prejudice, they seem like subject matter for scholars in ivory towers. But because the answers to fundamental questions about the origin of life determine how we view ourselves and our place in the universe, they profoundly affect our sense of identity, our decisions, our feelings, our relationships, our behavior - in fact, they affect all aspects of our life, including the goals of our whole secular society.

According to the understanding of modern chemists, the molecules involved are merely submicroscopic units of matter. The remarkable ways in which they combine might lead one to attribute mystical potencies for self-organization to them. Scientists however, are quick to reject this idea, insisting instead that molecules do nothing more than follow the laws of physics. But just how molecules acting according to these relatively simple mechanistic laws could combine together to produce inconceivably complicated cells has yet to be explained. And how such cells could evolve according to the same laws to produce complex higher organisms is an even knottier question. So despite the rigid adherence of the scientific community to the current mechanistic explanation of chemical evolution, it would seem appropriate for us to remain open to the possibility that other factors may be involved in chemical evolution - perhaps even some kind of self-intelligent organizing principle.

About twelve years ago, I was walking through the Galleria shopping mall in Houston, Texas and something within prompted me to stop in at the American Express Travel Service agent counter. I asked the lovely lady at the counter for a pamphlet or brochure on every possible location in the world a person could possibly travel to. The lady asked if I might be a bit more specific on my objective. I told her I would love to see all the most magnificent and beautiful places in the world. She told me it might take some time. I told her I would be back after lunch with a cart to carry all the promotion pieces. She was a bit stunned, but she fulfilled the request.

One hour later I picked up the one foot high stack of travel promotion pieces. The ultimate pilgrimage for wisdom! Edifice courses are a continuation of Mastery level programs. With travels longer in duration and more distant in location than Mastery, Edifice further expands the student's understanding of the wisdom and sacred mysteries of the world's ancient civilizations. In each country, Dr. Demartini guides you through an in depth exploration of the art, science, languages, religions and philosophies of the most influential cultures the world has ever known.

Eleven years ago, while I was working on a project involving archeology and reading The Mythological Papyri - Egyptian Religious Texts and Representations , I suddenly came upon the word "edifice." Instantly both my eyes began to water. I quickly looked up this word and those related to it in a nearby dictionary and came upon the following definitions:

• Edification : Intellectual, moral or spiritual improvement; enlightenment.
• Edifice : A building, especially one of imposing appearance or size. Something with an elaborate structure. To build a house. The Keystone or cornerstone of a great sacred architectural structure.
• Edify : To instruct or enlighten so as to encourage moral or spiritual improvement. To build, to instruct, to elevate, to edify, to inspire, to illuminate, to teach, to train, to inform, to tell, to elucidate.

As I was reading these definitions I became ever more inspired for I felt that I had just received another gift to my school. I paused for a moment and just stared across the room not being particularly focused on anything and pondered what possible significance all of these associated words had for me. A moment later I found myself being enraptured by a vision. It was standing before the great Egyptian Pyramid of Giza. As I was standing there, in my mind's eye my inner voice instructed me to begin developing a series of on location educational programs involving the greatest cultures of the historical world. I was to begin with the Egyptian culture and gradually encompass the globe. That night the following series of educational programs were birthed as well as the corresponding series of written volumes now called The Concourse of Wisdom - Cultures of Wisdom.
