The Law of Discipline
“You Can Have an Amazing Life in just 60 Days.”
The law of nature is, do the thing and you shall have the power: but they who do not the thing have not the power.
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
Dear Friends,
The law of discipline may sound singularly uninspiring, but the word discipline comes from the same Latin root as disciple. Years ago, I sought to discover what a true disciple is (as opposed to the usual meaning of “follower”), and I came to realize that these are individuals who listen to and obey the inner messages and visions of their soul. They follow their inspirations, and are therefore stirred to action and focused in their pursuits: They exhibit discipline.
Over the years I have asked myself, How do I express even more inspired discipline in my life? For I knew that this is one of the keys to living an amazing and fulfilling life. In time I discovered that one of the ways was to use a checklist to keep me focused. It acted as a prompter, to remind and even push me. Did I do this? Did I do that? So I created what I call a “Did I?” checklist. What a powerful little tool it became! Every single day, I checked things off. At the time, I was a practicing chiropractor, and I kept this important list on my office desk:
Everything I found to be of help in my career or life was incorporated into my checklist. Every item was written as, “Did I do that today?” At the end of the day, I checked them all off, or put an X beside the ones I didn’t do. I gave myself a self-monitoring, self-accountability checklist. And at the end of the day, I found myself doing much more of what worked by having my daily checklist in front of me.
Every morning I looked at what I’d X’d the day before. At the end of every day, I saw how many checks I could get. Since the actions I had accumulated on my checklist had all been proven to work, this became a way of keeping me on track. It kept me even more disciplined.
You may be asking, What happens if I’m using a checklist, but I find myself still sliding on some of the actions? Set up some kind of a reward system for yourself, to make sure you do what you say you would love to do. I found a great incentive. Every time I missed one of the items on my list, I had to pay five dollars into a little bucket on my desk. When I did all the items on my list, my staff had to buy me lunch. When I didn’t, I had to buy them lunch. With a large staff, this really motivated me after a while! It pushed me to do what I really desired to do. When you have a big enough why, the hows take care of themselves. If you have a large enough and inspiring enough mission, you tend to do the things that help you fulfill it.
Start with a checklist. Give yourself rewards. Get someone to make you accountable. The power of discipline will start showing up in your life. I guarantee you’ll do more of what you know works, and you’ll get to do more of what you love in life. The power of discipline makes you the disciple. You get to follow your own soul. That is self-actualization.
Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined.
-Henry David Thoreau
